7 Things on Our Bucket List this January

7 Things on Our Bucket List this January Knit One Stitch Two in Pennington offers a variety of classes in knitting--a great skill to learn this winter.

As 2020 begins and a new decade starts, here are some ideas to check out this January:

Find the Best Hot Cocoa In Town

As the temperatures drop, nothing tastes better than a hot cup of cocoa. Try hot chocolate at local spots like The Bent Spoon, Thomas Sweet or the Lindt Chocolate Shop and try to pick a favorite!

While The Bent Spoon offers hot chocolate in classic or vegan options, they can make either into organic peppermint or heirloom habanero flavors. They also offer a Winter White Magic Hot Chocolate with spoonmade vanilla whip, NJ honey, vanilla marshmallows, vegan vanilla whip, eggnog whip & peppermint schtick pieces.

Thomas Sweet not only has Hot Chocolate on their menu — but Hot Nutella too!

Go Sledding

As soon as the snow begins to fall, grab your snow suit and boots and your favorite sled and get to one of the area's favorite sledding destination. Springdale Golf Course, Rosedale Park, Mercer County Tech School, Federal City Road Water Basin and Ben Franklin Elementary are all great local options to bring out the innerchild in you.

Take a Cooking Class

The winter weather is the perfect reason to work on those kitchen skills. Try a class at The Farm Cooking School. Just this month they are offering a variety of courses including: a French cooking series, Kids in the Kitchen class, Homesteading: Sausage & Bacon and Gourmet Essentials: Knife Skills.

Grab Some Soup

Whether making your own soup or enjoying some of the area's local restaurants best soup or chili, it’s sure to warm you up. We’d like to try soups at Princeton-area favorites like Princeton Soup & Sandwich, The Pho Spot, The Red Onion and Olsson's Fine Foods. Do you have a favorite spot to get some local soup or chili?

Get Knitting

Knit One Stitch Two in Pennington offers a favorite of classes to keep you busy this January. With lessons including: Socks 2 at a Time with Jan, Knitting in the Round, Mommy & Me (grown ups do not have to know how to knit!) and a few more, you can whip up hats, scarves and gloves for yourself and loved one to stay warm this winter.

Join a Local Book Club

The Princeton Library offers a variety of book clubs for locals. Start the year off right by diving into a good book and discussion. Black Voices (meets the 2nd Thursday of the month at 7:15PM), Contemporary Fiction (meetings the 2nd Thursday of each month at 10:30AM), Historical Fiction (meets Tuesday at 6:30PM on January 15) and Mystery Book Group (meets the 1st Monday of each month at 7:30PM) are all great options.

Wassail the Apple Trees at Terhune Orchards

On January 26 from1:00 pm - 4:00 pm Terhune Orchards will celebrate the ancient British tradition of wassailing the apple trees.

This tradition is to help protect the orchards and insure a successful crop for the next season.  Activities are to include dancing and singing by the Molly Dancers and re-enactments of old English traditional rituals.  Everyone joins in with chanting and music making, toasts of hot cider and placing gifts of cider-soaked bread in the tree branches while chanting the lively words of praise for the New Year. You can warm yourself next to the bonfire (marshmallows included). Live music, provided by the Spiced Punch quartet playing traditional music using violins and flutes of many kinds, will be performed all afternoon.  The festivities are free and open to the public, young and old.
